Cloud Cult - Lucky Today
The Eagles - Journey Of The Sorcerer

That F&T song reminds of a time as a kid, sitting in a local KFC waiting with Mom to get a bucket of chicken and the in house Muzak system playing along, muffled as it were, with beautiful music. Sort of odd to hear this sort of thing in a KFC, but keep in mind this was in 1980 and sitting in KFC waiting for your order to come up was a typical thing.

Sort of like waiting in Captain D's for a family pack. Sometimes it would take 20 to 25 minutes for the order to be ready. And you wait, with the Muzak blaring ahead with a chintzy cover of 'If' done by the James Last Orchestra (or something to that effect)

Or sitting in the car in the parking lot of what was then one of two Kroger stores in the area, listening to WZEZ EZ 93 (now WJXA 'Mix 92.9') and marveling how stereophonic 'Close To You' by The Carpenters was (still is, of course).

Or hanging with an old college buddy at his apartment, which was located across from a nursing home and tuning into it's Part 15 FM station which relayed a music service called 'Potpourri', again playing beautiful instrumentals with an unobtrusive announcer saying, "This is Potpourri" every two or three songs.

With the passage of the Local Community Radio Act, there may be a chance to apply for a LPFM frequency in my town. If this ever came to fruition, I'd love to run EZ/BI music 24/7 on this station.

Probably not all too practical, eh?

Maybe 23/7?

The Console Drive - Show #6

Playlist for today's show

Crosby, Stills and Nash - Marrakesh Express
Judy Collins - How Are Things In Glocca Morra?
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Born On The Bayou

Bread - Everything I Own
The Mudlarks - Who Wrote The Book (Booouhk) Of Love
Les Paul & Mary Ford - Vaya Con Dios
Andy Williams - Music To Watch Girls By
Gordon Lightfoot - Beautiful
Rod Stewart - You Wear It Well

Typical self indulgent playlist, I know, especially with the repeated plays of The Alan Parsons Project and Goblin.

I am a big fan of instrumental music, particularly music used as themes for local newscast 'intros' and 'outros'. Frank Mills' 'Music Box Dancer' was once used for what was then WNGE Nashville Channel 2's (now WKRN) news theme back in the 70's and 80's.

To prove that this was the case, here's a YouTube clip where Frank Mills actually performed the song live at the end of a Channel 2 newscast (played over a backing track, of course).

Note how the news anchors walk up to the piano in appreciation. Priceless.

The Console Drive - Show #5 - 11/14/2010

Playlist for today's show. .

Marz - The Pop Song
The Who - Bargain
Optiganally Yours - Down
The Police - Oh My God
The Bee Gees - How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?

Andre 3000 - Prototype
Firefall - Strange Way
Steely Dan - Sign In Stranger
Heatwave - Groove Line
Hall And Oates - One On One
The Crusaders - Serenity

You probably won't notice much difference in the audio quality, but we edited today's show using the public beta of Adobe Audition for Mac OS X. I used the iZotope multiband processor 'Broadcast' setting for the final mix.

For many years, we've used Cool Edit Pro on the Windows platform with great success. So far, AA for Mac OS X seems solid as a rock, with a few new features added for a quicker work flow. I particularly like the 'scrub' function, although I hate having to click twice to move the cursor back to the position from where I desire audio playback on sound clips.

I hope the price won't be too high when it goes final, 'cause I want a copy of it.

Eric Clapton - Black Rose

And yes, I know, something completely different. .

John Oswald - Plexure (Full)

Got into John Oswald, especially his Plunderphonic CD, back in my MTSU days. Used to play it to fall asleep by, a massive deconstruction of pop tunes of the late 80's (the album was released in '89).

Once again, seek, consume, enjoy. .

Rebroadcast of Show #3 - 11/01/10

Due to an emergency, I had to rebroadcast last week's show this week. New program up for next week, so stay tuned. .

Quite a few long cuts today as I was struggling to get the show ready for broadcast. Time ran out on mixdown and upload to RFN's servers, so I decided to stream the show from the home studio. Yes, I know, I could have done the show live to begin with, but I am uber lazy. .

New FB group. . seek out 'The Console Drive'. .

The Console Drive - Show #2 - 10/18/2010

Play list for 10/18/2010

Greg Hale Jones - Boll Weevil
Joseph Arthur - Honey And The Moon
Air - Ce Matin La
The James Last Orchestra - Ballad Of Easy Rider

The Beatles - It's All Too Much
Sammy Johns - Chevy Van
Carole King - Music
Goblin - Tirrasegno
The Crusaders - Feelin' Funky
Outkast - Dracula's Wedding
Aretha Franklin - Don't Play That Song For Me

Air was a band I got into in my college days, circa late 90's. We had the CD 'Moon Safari' in rotation at WMTS, Middle Tennessee's student radio station and I always stopped to listen when one of the cuts from this disc kicked in. The song 'Sexy Boy' was quite popular amongst the DJs, although I was a fan of the other album cuts from that disc. 'Ce Matin La' has that definite 'EZ' sound to it. . always a favorite and thus in today's play list.

The Crusaders 'Those Southern Knights' from '76 is a bit of jazz funk goodness, with 'Feelin' Funky' keeping the pace with a groovin' afternoon.

Okay, enough with the cheesy verbiage. Seek. Enjoy. .

New Show Title. .

So, we're back on the air under a new title, 'The Console Drive'. Format is similar to our old show 'EZ 989: The Restful Station', but we are going to try to avoid strange and weird music, aka 'outsider music'. We will play the typical sappy lite FM hot stereo rock that was popular in the 70's through the 80's. Occasionally, we'll delve into electro-lounge and/or folktronica (although we will NOT play any Moby).

I will try to post playlists after each show in a reasonable amount of time, so bear with me if I don't get 'em up on the site fast enough.

First show was Monday, 10/11/2010.

Playlist to come. .

In case you were wondering about the title of the show, it is based on a conversation I had with fellow DJ Angie of 'The Cat Beast Party' not too long ago. We were talking about some of the issues with our air console and I stated we should do a benefit to raise money for a new one. She agreed wholeheartedly and I said, "Yeah, we could call the benefit show, 'The Console Drive'". It seemed catchy enough, so I decided to use it as a show title.

Debating on creating a Facebook fan page for the show, but we will see how it goes. .

We've cut the show back to an hour, as I simply don't have alot of time these days to work on two hours each week.

Yay. So predictable, I am. .

This is my back. . .

Welp, we're back again. Yes, I know, I said I was quitting my position at Radio Free Nashville and this blog would be deleted, but it was hard to let it go. After some thinking about it (more like agonizing about it), I decided to come back to Friday nights from 10pm to midnight (like I did initially).

We're going to focus completely on experimental and free noise music, avoiding those 'light and EZ favorites' as best as we can (unless they are cut up and mashed up, of course).

Submissions to the show are welcome; as long as they meet FCC guidelines, we'll probably play it.

First episode of the 'New WRP' (sort of like the 'New Andy Griffith Show') will be Friday, February 12, 2010. Not sure what we're going to do, but I feel positive that it will be a fun time.
